Headquartered in San Francisco, California, Stellar is a decentralized, blockchain network that allows users to move and store all forms of currency around the world. Advertised as a ‘faster, cheaper, and more energy-efficient’ alternative to other blockchain systems, Stellar, and the native cryptoasset XLM or Lumen, have assisted over 4 million users to process over 450 million operations since their launch in 2014. While Stellar offers Lumen coins, and requires their use when initially signing up, they claim to favour no single currency, wanting to enhance existing financial systems and create digital versions of all forms of money. They call themselves ‘cryptocurrency-adjacent’, as they are not looking to replace traditional currency. Instead, Stellar hope to enhance them.
